+On Monday morning the kids asked for the plan for the day. I told them, "I want to make your room fun again! How can we have any fun in this room when it looks like this?" And somehow the kids bought into this idea of making their room fun again...
+When Elsie comes inside after playing in her crocs and tights she'll say, "Ah! My tights are socking wet!"
+Ivar and Elsie have this series of moves on the back of the couch that they like to do. They lay on their backs and slide down the couch until there legs flop to the side. They laugh and laugh and call it their "Okie Pokie Exercises."
+Anytime a shirt needs to be put right I'll hear, "Mom! Get this outside out!"
+I hear the kids talk about "Far Town" all the time. From what I could piece together, it is a place at Mimi and Papa's. So at Easter I asked them to show me Far Town and they led me to a teeny part of the basement that has become a magical place for them. I still don't quite understand what happens in Far Town, but I believe they have found their own Narnia. I love that so much.
+In this house we call the fly swatter the fly swiper. And when a paper is wadded up it is crampled.
+We have been bird watching again this spring. We had hundreds of Junco's in our trees for a few days. Before I knew what they were called I told the kids we should come up with a name like Adam got to name the animals. They are dark grey with a white underside. Ivar came up with Night and Elsie came up with Moon for the undersides so we call them Night Moons. Isn't that poetic?!! Way better than the Junco.
+The kids begged to eat their lunch on this little part of the counter. They loved it and it made for a very special and silly lunch.

First of all, how sweet is this girl? I can't get enough. And that quilt! I love it so much.
I kept a piece of paper with me this week and wrote down vocabulary that I believe may be unique to our family. It started when I heard my kids talking about A Mall of Themerica. And I realized this has been going on for some time and I just can't correct it. I'm even proud of them for saying it this way! A Mall of Themerica. It's just so awesome.
Then I thought about how we team up into two groups: The Peanut Butter Boys and The Jelly Girls. This was started almost a year ago and used all the time. Yesterday Rory and Ivar went to get haircuts. When Elsie wanted to know if she was going I said, "Nope, the Jelly Girls are staying home and reading books. Just the Peanut Butter Boys are going." It's very helpful and makes any division of the genders sound more fun.
I can't remember if I've written about this one yet, but when Rory was up at North House Folk School, I told the kids at lunch, "I love Grand Marais (pronounced Ma Ray) so much." And Ivar said, "I love this sandwich so much." And I said, "Maybe we should call that sandwich a Grand Marais." And wouldn't know you, it stuck. So anytime he asks for a Grand Marais, I whip up a ham and deli cheese sandwich with mayonnaise and mustard, If we're out of ham it's called a Cheesy Marais (very healthy!) We've also had Salami Marais.
And Dark Dark Mountain is the coat closet in our kitchen. I'm not sure when it got that name, but I believe it was given by Ivar during some sort of pretend play. This has also completely stuck so that if Elsie can't find her shoes I'll ask, "have you looked in dark, dark mountain yet?!!"
I'm not sure how a family bonds, but I love our lingo and think it makes us stronger. When I was little we used to call the tall pine trees on the way up to Duluth, "Giraffe Trees" because they looked like long necks with only the actual branches up near the top. For years that was used in our family and I loved that it was only the Harrington clan that knew what on earth a Giraffe Tree was...
overheard
Elsie had her blanket on her head while wearing her princess dress. I heard her say to Ivar, "I'm Maddie, because I am getting married. See my val? (veil) So I'm Maddie." Ivar said, "Oh, okay! Then I'll be Lisa!" (Maddie's mom. Ha!)
Ivar told me, "We are good pirates and we are fighting against the Philistines! And this time they don't just have one giant, they have nine! But we're going to win!"
Ivar said, "Elsie! You're just telling old tales!"
Frequently Elsie will invite me and Hattie to play with her, "We can play together! You be the mama, Hattie can be the baby and I'll be the little girl!"
We have been playing Christmastime this week, coloring wrapping paper to wrap things found around the house, making ornaments, hanging handmade decorations (basically, a lot of coloring.) I announced bedtime would be in 10 minutes and an exhausted Ivar threw himself on the floor crying, "I just have too many ornaments to make and presents to wrap! I'll never get it all done!"
Rory came and told me he saw the kids playing pretend on the couch and heard Elsie sigh, "We're almost there on a beautiful country drive."
Ivar said to me while sobbing, "I don't like how I'm acting either, but I just don't know how to stop!"
kid quotes
There are some words I refuse to correct, because they are so cute to me.
These are Ivar's:
-He calls the remote control a camote untroll
-And a permanent marker is called a provident marker
-When we drive by Buck Hill (a ski hill we drive by occasionally) he'll yell, "It's Ski Ball Mountain!"
-Today he started calling our woods the Spooky Branches Forest
-He'll yell, "It's the PBS man!" when the UPS guy drives up to our house
And these are Elsie's:
Big Softy = the big blue bathrobe Elsie sleeps with along with Pinky, her pink blanket
She'll ask, "Mommy, can you scramble this?" when she wants me to open up a plastic egg for her
When I put Elsie down for bed she says, "and now you go have a sucker with daddy?"
When Elsie doesn't want to do something or feels sad she tells us, "I'm feeling a little tender."
When Elsie knows she's in trouble with her dad she'll start crying, "Daddy! I am feeling a little worried!!"

kid quotes
I never put these pictures up, but this was such a happy day for us I just want the pictures documented. These pictures were from a Monday in October that was so stunning my kids ended up barefoot in the river. And one week later there was snow accumulating on the ground which made me very glad we had soaked up this glorious last bit of fall weather.
Here's some kid quotes to kick off your weekend:
*I overheard Ivar and Elsie in the living room. Ivar said, "Now you'll be in big, big, big, big trouble!" And Elsie shot back, "No! I'll be in teeny, teeny, teeny big trouble!"
*I was trying to snuggle with Elsie holding her like a baby. I said, "you're still my little baby." She sat right up in my arms, looked me in the eye and said gruffly, "I'm not a baby! I'm a sister!"
*Two times at small group our kids haven't gone to bed before the company came. So they got to be a part of everyone's check in. Last night they listened patiently and when it was time for us I asked Elsie if she had something to share and she lifted her hands in the air and announced, "I grew up! I'm tall!" The other time they got to share Ivar ran away for a while and came back to show everyone that we had got new toothpaste at Target.
